SEQICC Leading the Way as it Celebrates 3 Years

The South East Queensland Indigenous Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 3rd Anniversary recently with members and guests at the Brisbane Workers Community Centre in Paddington.  The night was a fantastic way to wrap up another successful year for the Chamber.

SEQICC President Charlie Jia commented, "It was a good time to reflect on another year of business for the Chamber and its members."  He announced the development of the Chamber's 2010 Calendar of Events to be launched and posted on the website in the near future.

The celebrations were well supported by the following sponsors who donated several prizes on the night:

  • Willmett Group;
  • Black Publications;
  • Karma Lifestyles;
  • Flight Centre; and
  • Journey Forward.

In its 3rd year, the Chamber has been instrumental in a number of key developments across Australia.  "Our presence has influenced the establishment of the Victorian Indigenous Chamber of Commerce, the Australian Indigenous Minority Supply Council, the Australian Indigenous Business Council and more recently the Indigenous Business Network of the Northern Territory.   Closer to home, interest has come from Indigenous business groups in Mount Isa, Townsville, the Gold Coast and Rockhampton." Mr Jia reported.

Back in 2006, founders of this Chamber had the presence of mind to foresee a national network of the Indigenous business community.  Mr Jia stated, "It was all about positioning Indigenous business for our communities to foster and grow a sound economic base."

2010 is shaping up to be another exciting year for the Chamber, keen to increase its membership, attracting old and new sponsors and developing a range of products and services targeted at business growth and prosperity.

Indigenous Business Network Northern Territory

Charlie Jia (SEQICC President) attended the Indigenous Business Network Luncheon to witness the formation of the network's Executive Committee in Darwin recently. The network has attracted the support of the Northern Territory Government as well as Australian Government agencies.  Toni Ah Sam (President) of the IBNNT is one of approximately 130 businesses located in Darwin who have supported this venture.

"It is great to see how proactive the Aboriginal business community is becoming.  Establishment of these types of networks will help many of these business to connect, in their own region, state or territory, nationally and internationally.  Which is great for business."  commented  Charlie Jia.

Networking Night a Big Hit on the Sunshine Coast.

The inaugural Networking @ Night event on the Sunshine Coast attracted a diverse array of business owners and guests. The night was highlighted by inspirational stories from Indigenous business owners, Richard Brown (Back to Basics), Leesa Watego Ah Kee (Blacklines Publications) and De Greer Yindimincarlie (Blue House Art Gallery).

Although the breath of the discussion was invigorating, in particular the social networking opportunities for small business and the importance of business leadership, concerns relating to local issues faced by the host business provided for interesting dialogue and generated helpful suggestions from the audience.

Many thanks to De and Julie for hosting the event at the Blue House Art Gallery which they strongly remind everyone is still "OPEN FOR BUSINESS" regardless of the developments at the end of Caloundra Road.
