Echnida Magic Steals the Networking Spotlight
The SEQ Indigenous Chamber of Commerce's Networking @ Night Event sponsored by AIB Insurance was a huge success mainly due to new Indigenous owned business, "Echidna Magic". Approximately 30 guests and members fell under the spell of this fantastic venture. Located at the Mt Gravatt Lookout, this is a must visit and dine venue. The views of Brisbane are just breathtaking.
"It has been four weeks since we opened its doors though 17 years in the making." enthused Trish Williams (Manager/Owner). "We have been well supported by the local community with only "word of mouth" marketing. Even so, bookings are coming in and "Mother's Day" is already booked out."Guest Speaker, Michael Ball representing AIB Insurance encouraged all business to ensure their risks are well identified, considered and managed. IBA Chairperson attends SEQICC Business Breakfast
Dr DAWN CASEY, the newly appointed Chairperson of Indigenous Business Australia was the Keynote Speaker at the SEQICC Indigenous Small Business Mentoring Breakfast Seminar sponsored by Small Business Solutions (Qld) and Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE.
The breakfast seminar attracted approximately 80 people representing Indigenous business, RTOs, Government agencies and the indigenous community. Dr Casey, in her new role, is keen to hear from business and community about better ways of providing services and products currently offered by IBA.
"It was refreshing to hear that IBA is undergoing a number of forums across the country to get this advice." commented Charlie Jia (SEQICC President).
SEQICC Mo Bros raise much need funds for Men's Health Research

 
A great effort by the SEQICC Movember Team who have raised $1,664.57. Great work fellas on a job well done.
We must thank everyone who have kindly supported the team and thank the guys for a mighty crack at growing their mos. The Chamber will be looking for new recruits for Movember 2010.
As many of you know, Movember is about raising much needed funds and awareness for men's health specifically prostate cancer
and depression in men. Important when you learn that close to 3,000 men die of prostate cancer each year in Australia and one in eight men will experience
depression in their lifetime, many of whom do not seek help.

Justin Power wins QTA Award
CONGRATULATIONS to former SEQICC Trainee, Justin Power who was awarded the 2009 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year intheQTA's South
Brisbane and Gold Coast Region. Justin received his award at a presentation ceremony at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast. All finalists in this award category were of a very high standard and certainly shining lights of their respective communities.
A humble Justin commented, "Being nominated was great though making the final with 2 inspirational Indigenous people was an honour. I am really surprised and over the moon with the award and thank the South East Queensland Indigenous Chamber of Commerce for the opportunity and support to develop my skills." Justin now qualifies to compete in the QTA State Awards being held in September 2009.
SEQICC secures the Carbon Diet Program
The South East Queensland Indigenous Chamber of Commerce has received funding from the Queensland State Government’s Environmental Protection Agency to undertake a series of activities to assist members achieve substantial financial and energy savings by Carbon Dieting.
The Chamber will include regular, short presentation in our Networking @ Night events that will demonstrate the simple and effective ways your business and your household can reduce greenhouse gas emissions (with a subsequent reduction in your energy costs as well). We will also be offering a Carbon Dieter’s Award for those members who achieve significant savings in their Carbon footprint.
We will be preparing some easy guidelines and tips that you can use at work and home that will be available on the SEQICC website soon. We are also planning to provide examples of best practice in tackling climate change issues that have been formulated by international First Nations groups and organisations.
Later in the year we will be convening a Carbon Diet Forum and Advice event that will further explain and demonstrate the effective ways you can save money and the environment. SEQICC is proud to be part of this program that will have positive impacts not only for us but for all future generations as well.
